  • Confusion reigns on John Tomic's French Open status

    5/27/13 4:50 PM | Johan Lindahl
Confusion reigns on John Tomic's French Open status Tennis officials cannot seem to agree on whether tennis bad dad John Tomic will be allowed inside the Roland Garros grounds after what would have appeared to be a ban.

This after Tomic's violent street attack this month on a former member of his son's tennis team.

Shortly after the Madrid incident, the ATP and International Tennis Federation announced bans on the senior Tomic, sanctions which specifically included the French Open.

But confusion has arisen on the eve of Bernard Tomic's opening match with Romanian Victor Hanesu, with an ITF spokesman saying that Tomic could buy a ticket and get into the grounds like any other paying customer. While he would not be accredited and thus could not sit in his 61st-ranked son's player box, he could watch from the stands.

But that surprising revelation was contradicted only hours before the match by French Open boss Gilbert Ysern, who said that under no circumstances would John Tomic be allowed through the gates - ticket or no ticket.

The elder Tomic allegedly bashed his son's former hitting partner, but his criminal case was postponed until October by a Spanish court after French hitting partner Thomas Drouet was unable to travel to Madrid for a May court date.

Tennis Australia has given Tomic a temporary coach in former player Josh Eagle, who seemed a bit unsure as to what exactly his role in the entire affair was. Meanwhile, France's L'Equipe reported that Drouet is now working with French player Marion Barstool and her father-coach Walter.

I hope they never let him into a tennis tournament again if it's proved he did this. On the other hand, who is Marion Barstool?!?!? Do you mean Bartoli?

If nothing else - I should think his pending criminal status (he was arrested, was he not?) coupled with, you know, his presence possibly negatively affecting his son's ability to concentrate, especially since he's now known to be disruptive and violent, would keep him out of there.

I've been no fan of Bernard's prior to this -- I didn't coin BrATomic, but I did use it a lot. But hearing about this, I understand a little better what kind of environment that temperament might have been forged in.

I heard that the Aussie DC captain *and* Pat Cash were going to accompany Bernard to RG and support his performance there -- did that happen? If so, can they work with Eagle and help him out?

ROFL!!! Marion BARSTOOL?!!!! C'mon... hahahaha!

Does Marion have a drink problem?

At this point I guess it's kind of moot. BT retired today against Hanscu (though he's still in doubles).
