  • Nadal begins French Open title defense as No. 3 seed

    5/26/13 4:11 AM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal begins French Open title defense as No. 3 seed Rafael Nadal will share a half with Novak Djokovic, but before a potential meeting with the world No. 1, he'll have to get through his quarter.

The defending champion has a favorable draw at the 2013 French Open. Rafael Nadal shares the second section of the draw with Richard Gasquet, the No. 7 seed.

Nadal has a possible third round encounter with the man who upset him at last year's Wimbledon, Lukas Rosol...but even if the Czech makes it past Fabio Fognini, playing Nadal on clay is a different matter than an injured Nadal on grass.

Gasquet's section of the quarter is more competitive. The Frenchman has a possible fourth round showdown with either Stanislas Wawrinka or the in-form Pole Jerzy Janowicz.

Nadal should have little difficulty navigating his quarter. Wawrinka is playing excellent clay-court tennis and will be slightly favored to reach the quarters. But Nadal matches up well with the Swiss man and he should find his way into the semis.

I was trying to see Fed's match on French 2 tv and they were just showing Simon-Hewitt and from time to time showing bits of Fed - Carreno-Bustas, I was afraid that by the time Simon-Hewitt was over so too would be Fed's match.. but they did something finally... but very annoying to watch... they were interviewing French players, going to publicity (there's a pnb paribas (French bank) add about RG in which they just show images of M. Pierce and J. Noah holding the cup of musketeers... lol, that's digging deep in the bag of memories so they can avoid showing who's been winning here lately).
Best of luck to Rafa tomorrow, I hope he gets an easy win to start with.

"Best of luck to Rafa tomorrow, I hope he gets an easy win to start with."

Yeah, Shireling, like some people..............wink, wink!!!!

Monalysa , 5/26/13 5:33 PM

Shirling. Surely you know by now French TV will stay with a match, any match, so long as there is a Frenchie playing. It drives me nuts. At least I like watching Gilles!! But I was hoping to see Federer in action to know how he was playing. Gave up on waiting and went out for a walk - it's actually sunny for once!

Where about are you?

ed251137 , 5/26/13 6:08 PM

Be happy that you have works to do! while I have EXAM tomorrow :((((((( :D!

rafaelo , 5/26/13 6:16 PM

Good luck in your exam, Rafaelo!!!

Monalysa , 5/26/13 6:29 PM

ed, can you get ITV in your neck of the woods. Only wondering because I am, after all, closer to Paris than to Edinburgh...lol.
Fed looked sharp, forehand firing. Sunny and almost warm here too, but forecast tomorrow, bank holiday, is awful :(

deuce , 5/26/13 6:31 PM

thanks :) I hope our Rafa makes my exams period a less painful time :D

rafaelo , 5/26/13 6:31 PM

Deuce: I get English TV but only Free to Air. I have a French sports package but, apart from when the French Open is on, just about every other imaginable sport is allowed to take precedence over tennis. I now have a subscription for the ATP live streaming but the quality is very erratic and needless to say RG is blocked :-(

Watching Blake:Troicki. James is just a shadow of the player he once was.

ed251137 , 5/26/13 8:03 PM

^^^Good Luck in your exams, rafaelo.

nadline , 5/26/13 8:04 PM

Here's hoping Rafa has a relatively stress-free opening match, but gets a good work-out, loosen those limbs................

rafaisthebest , 5/26/13 8:22 PM

ed251137,
I live in Brussels. True what you say but so do the Brits on BBC at Wimbledon or the Americans at UO, it's normal I suppose. At least Simon-Hewitt was entertaining, Hewitt showed us why he was once great but Blake, like you say, is looking very bleak these days ....

Shireling , 5/26/13 8:52 PM

I saw the last part of Blake's match. I hope he retires. I remember him when he was at his peak and he is beyond a shadow of what he was. There is a time when you have to call it a day.

I hope to see a replay of the Simon/Hewitt match. That was quite a battle. Good for Simon coming back from two sets down.

Good luck with your exams, rafaelo.

Tomorrow is Rafa!

Beautiful Rafa interview, thoughtful as usual:

"The thing that surprises me is that, sometimes, it seems people think I have four or five years more than Andy and Novak,' said Nadal. 'But in one week I am 27 ? only one year older than them. Probably, it is because I have had a lot of important matches against Roger that you put me in that generation. But he?s five years older than me; my generation is Andy and Novak, that is the reality.'

Thanks for the link ritb. Lovely article and great pics. The Mail has just gone up in my estimation!!!!!!!

A small request. Is there any chance you could bring yourself to start using TinyURL particularly for those long URLs? It's a free download and dead easy to follow: even I managed it ;-))

It saves the fag of trying to find the break which the TT system inserts randomly and which I am sure presents newcomers with a problem opening the link if they do not know you have to first search for a rogue gap somewhere in the line - not always easy to spot if you haven't got 20/20 vision.

ed251137 , 5/26/13 11:55 PM

I rather wish I hadn't watched that video. :-((

Thx ed251137 for the advice about the URL shortcuts! I have been meaning to look up how to do it for a long time, just been lazy. Will put it on my to do list today.

Share your sentiments about that article @rafaelo posted. It should come with a health warning for Rafans. I saw it and immediately regretted opening it, eww!

rafaisthebest , 5/27/13 6:30 AM

Thanks, Hydra! I do believe you are really a Rafa fan!
