• Montanes wins his sixth career title in Nice

    5/26/13 2:34 AM | Cheryl Murray
Montanes wins his sixth career title in Nice Albert Montanes upset the home favorite Gael Monfils to capture his sixth career title, with the French Open just a day from starting.

Spain's Albert Montanes was on his way to a blowout win over French wildcard Gael Monfils before faltering in the second set a little. Still, Montanes managed to secure the 6-0, 7-6(3) win.

For all of the first set and half of the second, Montanes was on absolute fire. The Spaniard didn't drop a game in the first set as he effectively silenced the French crowd, desperate to cheer on the popular Monfils.

Montanes was still in devastating form until 4-1, when he suddenly lost his way. Monfils managed to claw his way back into the set. He managed to draw even on serve to force a tiebreaker.

Unfortunately for the crowd and Monfils, Montanes re-found his form in the breaker, securing the championship in straight sets.
