Ferrer wins opener Fourth seed David Ferrer made a successful start to the French Open with a straight-sets victory over Australia's Marinko Matosevic. The veteran is through to take on either Albert Montanes or Steve Johnson in the next round.

World No. 5 David Ferrer advanced to the second round after defeating Australia's Marinko Matosevic Sunday afternoon. The 31-year-old Spaniard tallied 22 winners and 8 aces en route to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

"It is not easy to play with Matosevic because he has a very good serve, very good power with his shots, and sometimes, I can't play my game," Ferrer explained. "In the final (part) of the second and third sets, I played better. I (was) more consistent with my game and I happy because I'm in the second round."

After losing a break edge twice in the third set, Ferrer broke to 5-4 before closing the match.

He is through to take on fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes or American Steve Johnson in round two.
