  • Ferrer leads tough quarter at French Open

    5/25/13 11:19 PM | Kelli DeMario
Ferrer leads tough quarter at French Open World No. 5 David Ferrer is back on court for the second Grand Slam of the season, as a 128-player field assembles in Paris for the French Open. The Spanish No. 2 enters the tournament as the fourth seed.

World No. 5 David Ferrer makes his return to competition after reaching the quarterfinal at the Masters 1000 Rome. The 31-year-old recorded consecutive victories before falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in three sets.

With the absence of world No. 2 Andy Murray, Ferrer is seeded behind world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, world No. 3 Roger Federer and defending champion Rafael Nadal. The 31-year-old will be making his 11th appearance at the French Open, where he finished among the final four in 2012 (lost to Nadal).

Ferrer headlines a competitive quarter of the draw that includes (5) Tomas Berdych, (11) Nicolas Almagro, (14) Milos Raonic, (20) Andreas Seppi, (23) Kevin Anderson, (31) Marcel Granollers, and (32) Tommy Robredo. Other players in the same section are Gael Monfils, Jurgen Melzer, Xavier Malisse, Michael Llodra, Feliciano Lopez, Go Soeda, Steve Johnson, Albert Montanes, and Ernests Gulbis.

The nearest seed to the fourth seed is Granollers, who looms as a possible third-round opponent. Further progress through the draw may set a round of 16 clash with Raonic or Anderson and a quarterfinal meeting with Berydch.

Should Ferrer advance to the final four, he could take on 2009 champion Roger Federer for a place in the final. Ferrer is scheduled to open his campaign against Australia’s Marinko Matosevic.
