Federer holds off Janowicz to reach Rome semis Roger Federer gets past Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets on Friday in Rome. Federer is one win away from a possible final against Rafael Nadal.

Roger Federer advanced to the semifinals of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia with a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory over Jerzy Janowicz on Friday night. Federer recovered from a 5-3 deficit in the second set to prevail after one hour and 25 minutes.

Janowicz turned in a solid performance for the most part, aside from late hiccups in each of the two sets. The 24th-ranked Pole stayed on level terms until 4-5 in the first, when Federer struck at the perfect time to finish the opener with the first break of the day.

Huge hitting allowed Janowicz to answer with an immediate break for 1-0 in the second. Once again, however, the 10th game proved to be the underdog's undoing. An ill-timed drop-shot cost him a set point and Federer eventually broke back with a winning forehand. Two games later a tiebreaker had to decide things, and Federer bounced back from an early mini-break to dominate it the rest of the way.

"I knew it wasn't going to be another 6-1, 6-2 victory like the first two," Federer said, referring back to his early-round blowouts of Potito Starace and Gilles Simon. "Those who thought that was going to be the case don't know anything about tennis.

"It was a tough match. Janowicz showed some great tennis. I think he's very talented and has clearly proved that in the past. Coming here, in front of a full stadium, he had nothing to lose. The way he came out and played I thought was impressive. He had break points early in the first set. He swung and hit everything to get the break in the second set. He should have got the set. Clearly, I can be very happy to win in straight sets tonight."

Next up for the third-ranked Swiss is Benoit Paire, who eradicated Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-0.

If Roger does not win the tournament with the cakewalk draw he has enjoyed he should retire.
