Janowicz ousts Tsonga, Simon to face Federer Frenchmen experience mixed fortunes on Wednesday in Rome. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga goes down to Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets but Gilles Simon sets up a third-round showdown against Roger Federer.

    Jerzy Janowicz d. (8) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 7-6(5)

Janowicz scored a second-round upset of Tsonga after one one hour and 27 minutes at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Wednesday afternoon. The 22-year-old Pole held all 11 of his service games without facing a single break point to book one more clash against another Frenchman, Richard Gasquet.

The only break--the only break point, in fact--came at 2-2 in the first set. Janowicz earned it and held the rest of the way for an early advantage. Tsonga matched his opponent's impressive level throughout the second, but Janowicz served too big in the ensuing tiebreaker. The world No. 8 and world No. 24 combined for 10 aces without a single double-fault.

    Gilles Simon d. Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 6-3

Youzhny served at 83 percent for the match but was still broken six times in 11 service games as Simon advanced to the third round after one hour and 45 minutes. The 30-year-old Russian led by a break early in the first set, but break leads were entirely insignificant in this one. Simon ultimately earned three breaks to his opponent's two during the opener.

The world No. 17 fought off five set points at 4-5 in the first and from that point until the end he never looked back. Simon broke for 6-5 before serving it out and making quicker work of the second. The Frenchman wrapped up the proceedings in appropriate fashion, with his sixth break of the afternoon at 5-3. A final forehand error by Youzhny sent Simon through to a meeting with No. 2 seed Roger Federer.
