Mikhail Youzhny scores a minor upset of Tommy Haas in straight sets on Tuesday in Rome. Next up for Youzhny is a second-round showdown with Gilles Simon.
Mikhail Youzhny gained some much-needed momentum last week in Madrid and he maintained it with an impressive 6-4, 6-3 win over Tommy Haas in the first round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Tuesday. Youzhny held his last eight service games to advance in one hour and 21 minutes.
It had been a tale of two seasons for the veteran pair prior to this one. Haas had a 20-8 record while Youzhny had won only nine of 20 matches in 2013. The Russian, however, scored two three-set victories at the previous Masters event and perhaps he is not looking back. Haas broke Youzhny for a 2-0 lead in the first set, but it was mostly all Youzhny the rest of the way.
The world No. 30 stormed back from the early deficit to break his opponent twice before serving out the opening frame of play at 5-4. Haas, who has played a ton of tennis this season due to both his schedule and the fact that he has been winning so many matches, could not recover in set two. The 35-year-old German failed on both of his break chances and donated serve twice, including at 3-5 to end the proceedings.
Youzhny wrapped up his effort with three aces and two double-faults while serving at a stellar 79 percent. Next up for the 30-year-old is Gilles Simon, who battled past Filippo Volandri 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 later in the afternoon.
