• Djokovic slides past Montanes in Rome opener

    5/14/13 6:49 PM | Cheryl Murray
Djokovic slides past Montanes in Rome opener Novak Djokovic had no trouble getting past Spanish wildcard Albert Montanes to kick off his bid for the Rome Masters.

After a strange start, with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic spraying errors all over the place and a break of serve for Montanes, the Serb quickly righted the ship and ran through Montanes for a 6-2, 6-3 win.

For the first three games of the match, it looked as though Djokovic still carried rust with him from the single match he played in Madrid, but the success was short-lived for the Spaniard. After dropping the first two games, Djokovic ran the board and closed out the set easily.

Montanes made an attempt to at least keep up with the Serb in the second set, but an efficient Djokovic secured a single break in the early-goings and fought off the only break point against him to close out the match.

Djokovic awaits the winner of Stanislas Wawrinka and Alexandr Dolgopolov in the third round.
