    Nishikori makes strong start in Rome Tournament seed Kei Nishikori is through to the second round at the Masters 1000 Rome after taking out veteran Paolo Lorenzi late Monday. The Japanese No. 1 is joined by France's Benoit Paire, who outlasted Juan Monaco in three sets.

    Sixteenth seed Kei Nishikori advanced to the second round with a straight-sets ousting of Italy's Paolo Lorenzi. The 23-year-old held nine consecutive service games through an hour and 28 minutes of play. Nishikori broke to 3-1 and 5-2 in the opening set, then secured a key service break at 2-2 in the second.

    He is through to take on either Feliciano Lopez or Jeremy Chardy in the next round.

    Benoit Paire def. Juan Monaco 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-4

    France's Benoit Paire made the second round after outlasting Argentina's Juan Monaco in three sets. The 24-year-old tallied 13 aces and four service breaks through two hours of play. Paire completed the winning effort with three of five break points converted in the deciding set.

    He is through to face 12th seed Nicolas Almagro or compatriot Julien Benneteau in the second round.
