Fognini destroys Seppi, Janowicz gets past Giraldo Fabio Fognini makes quick work of an all-Italian clash against Andreas Seppi on Monday in Rome. Fognini is joined in the second round by Jerzy Janowicz, a straight-set winner over Santiago Giraldo.

    Fabio Fognini d. Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-1

Seppi made a brilliant run to the quarterfinals of last year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, but his 2013 campaign lasted a total of one hour and nine minutes. Fognini crushed his fellow Italian during first-round action on Monday afternoon to set up a meeting with Rafael Nadal.

A relatively competitive first set saw Seppi earn his only break of the day but he won just three of 11 second-serve points and was broken twice. After serving out the opener at 5-4, Fognini raced to a 4-0 advantage in the second. Seppi finally got on the scoreboard with a hold for 1-4, but he dropped serve at love in the final game and lost it in appropriate fashion with a forehand in the bottom of the net. The world No. 21 finished with 12 winners and 36 unforced errors.

    Jerzy Janowicz d. (Q) Santiago Giraldo 7-5, 6-2

Janowicz saved all 11 of the break points he faced to beat Giraldo in one hour and 25 minutes on Monday. Giraldo, who had already done well to qualify for the main draw, had a ton of chances in the first set. The Colombian earned nine break-point opportunities and twice had 0-40 leads--including with Janowicz serving down triple set point at 4-5. Giraldo could not convert and he failed to save the only break point against him at 5-5 before Janowicz stole the opener with a hold at 6-5.

With momentum in hand, the 22nd-ranked Pole had an easier time of things in the second. He fought off two break points before all but ending the match with his second break of the set at 4-2. Janowicz served out the proceedings one game later, when he converted match point with his ninth ace. Next up for the world No. 24, who fired 30 winners to Giraldo's 10, is a showdown against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
