  • Federer sticks to his long-term scheduling plan

    5/13/13 5:16 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer sticks to his long-term scheduling plan Roger Federer has faith in his long-term strategic scheduling and will not be swayed by an early setback last week in Madrid.

Instead, the solid Swiss is working to be set for this week's final tuneup date in Rome at the Foro Italico after his ranking dropped from second to third after losing to Kei Nishikori in Spain.

"I have a little more time here and I'm doing what you have to do get ready for the match," said the Swiss who took nearly two months off from mid-March March to heal a back niggle and get in some serious, long-range training, only returning in Madrid. "I practiced for almost three hours on Saturday, so now I'll slow it down a little. It is important to have good preparation."

Federer is not panicking about a season in which he is yet to win a title or play a final. "When you play well no one dares attack you. But look at the big picture. Short-term is important in terms of confidence and I'm playing well but in the big picture I'm doing this well, too.

"I have six weeks to play and I chose to take seven weeks off but people sometimes don’t respect. Now, it's important to focus on Rome and get used to playing on clay."

Federer believes his break will pay off down the track. "I hope it (the break) will help me start playing well while maybe the other guys get tired mentally after playing for months and months. I'm in a different phase from many others who have played three or four tournaments, that can be a big advantage. But then again, I have to start to win."
