  • Murray survives Simon, Berdych next

    5/10/13 1:21 AM | Kelli DeMario
Murray survives Simon, Berdych next World No. 3 Andy Murray came through an extended three-set battle with France's Gilles Simon late Wednesday. The Scot moves on to face world No. 6 Tomas Berdych for a place among the final four in Madrid.

Third seed Andy Murray survived a difficult round of 16 match with fellow seed Gilles Simon, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(6). The 25-year-old Scot missed five match points before closing at the two-hour, 58-minute mark.

With the match split at a set apiece, Murray went ahead 3-0 in the final set. Simon battled to level at 3-3, then pushed the match to a tie-break. After missing three match points in game 12, Murray regrouped to lead 4-1 in the tiebreak. Simon once again level to reach 4-4. Match points came at 6-4 for the Scot, who failed to convert either point. A sixth came at 7-6, with the Scot finally taking advantage.

Murray is through to battle sixth seed Tomas Berdych in the next round.

Oh Mr Murray, you're such a tease....kindly stop right now....;)

deuce , 5/10/13 7:23 AM

Three hours of will he wont he. But in spite of that it was an enjoyable ding dong battle between them - plus I have a soft spot for Gilles ;-)

ed251137 , 5/10/13 9:27 AM

Hope Andy gets this done faster than last night. After being put through the Ferru/Rafa wringer this afternoon not sure I am for a repeat of Andy's efforts of last night.

ed251137 , 5/10/13 9:32 PM

OK. A break at 3-all will do nicely.

But not if he hands it straight back.

ed251137 , 5/10/13 9:35 PM

I see we have a tight first set here. TB!

I just finished watching Rafa's match. However I must say that it's a lot easier when you know the score.

2-0 Berdy

Nativenewyorker , 5/10/13 10:05 PM

Andy is playing out of his tiny white cotton socks but to no avail. Berdy takes the set in a TB.

ed251137 , 5/10/13 10:12 PM

Have to say I have not at any point, before or during, had confidence about this one.

Before serving off for 2nd set he had that don't-care-if-I-get-beat-anyway look on his face.

alex , 5/10/13 10:18 PM

... and he gets broken straight away ...

Why does muzz have to get beaten by the only guy on tour I don't like?

#BigBadBird

alex , 5/10/13 10:21 PM

Muzz can't buy a first serve and bird so strong he's having to play brilliant tennis to win points on serve.

alex , 5/10/13 10:30 PM

What is it about Berdy's game that bothers Muzza so? I don't get it..........

rafaisthebest , 5/10/13 10:44 PM

Oh dear, 4-2 with 6-2 written all over it. this is no simon or cilic.

alex , 5/10/13 10:45 PM

muzz's error strewn brilliance wins the day the french flair players, but against killing machines like big bird and stan, when they're firing, he's just not going to stumble over any lines.

still he managed to hold for 4-3, so while there's life ... you never know, muzz might start playing some consistent quality tennis.

alex , 5/10/13 10:53 PM

Oh dear Andy.

Incidentally, it just occurred to me. Does Twinge who soO readily insulted deuce in passing the other day for no reason at all, as she (he?) does most posters here for no good reason,
ever post about Andy during or after a game? Don't remember. But she wrote she is a fan?9

chlorostoma , 5/10/13 10:56 PM

bird about to serve for match at 5-4 and muzz takes out new racquet :-)

alex , 5/10/13 10:59 PM

Berdy has really impressed me in this match: controlled aggression, good defense (this is new for him), good movement. He is not just a ball basher anymore......

rafaisthebest , 5/10/13 11:02 PM

Caja Magica: Numbers 1-4 toppled before the semis.......

rafaisthebest , 5/10/13 11:04 PM

Oh, boy...........................another one bites the dust!!!!......its must be the Madrid air!!!

Monalysa , 5/10/13 11:05 PM

oh muzz, why do we bother with clay?

It so pains me to say it, but well done, big bird, you deserved the win.

(But I hope rafa pummels you off the court on Sunday.)

alex , 5/10/13 11:07 PM

Not the first time we've said this about Bird not being a ball basher anymore. Good on him. But it pains for Andy.

chlorostoma , 5/10/13 11:10 PM

@10:18 PM

You put your finger on the problem. There was no hunger there for a win. So frustrating because in patches he was playing so well.

ed251137 , 5/10/13 11:12 PM

Ooopy-daisy, I did say after Novak crashed out that this opened the way for Muzza to reach his first clay final and if he did not, I would eat my hat. Well, guess it's time for some gourmandising on my part.........

rafaisthebest , 5/10/13 11:12 PM

oh, poor Andy..he really dislikes clay I think...I did not get to see the match but I kind of expected he could be troubled by Berdy...I hope Andy does better in Rome...

chlorostoma, 5/10/13 10:56 PM
I thought about it too...he/she is so quick to insult posters here but he/she is nowhere near here when Andy is playing...it doesn't really matter...Andy's true fans are always here to support him no matter what...

natashao , 5/10/13 11:21 PM

'Incidentally, it just occurred to me. Does Twinge who soO readily insulted deuce in passing the other day for no reason at all, as she (he?) does most posters here for no good reason,

What an awful post,
A. It's a he
B. No I did not (insult deuce)
C. Shove it you snivelling passive aggressive bore

:-)

Twinge , 5/10/13 11:22 PM

I never gave up hope that muzz would win a slam right up to last USO, but I have never had the remotest sense of destiny about clay. If there were no rafa, nole, roger or ferrer, I still wouldn't be confident about him reaching a clay final.

I don't understand why it is because he has all the skills and more to do well on the surface. Is it just because he doesn't really care that much about it or what? I don't know ...

And as for becker tipping muzz for RG, oh granny help me ...

alex , 5/10/13 11:23 PM

^^^i don't care that he doesn't do well on the clay
I'd rather he did better on grass and hard for the simple reason that is most of the tour

Twinge , 5/10/13 11:25 PM

'Andy's true fans are always here to support him no matter what...'

Er no, it's only a blog.
Overdoing it again aren't you.

Twinge , 5/10/13 11:27 PM

^^^ I do, twinge, I do.

I just wish that in ONE clay tournament, just one, he'd give me reason to hope like I do on hard grass and hard courts.

alex , 5/10/13 11:28 PM

The clay is basically dominated by one player (up until recently)
There's no shame in having not won a clay court title Alex!
Even players brought up on it have had to make do with sloppy seconds
Until recently that is

Twinge , 5/10/13 11:31 PM

Anyway his form seems to be slowly coming together.
He might be quite effective come Rome

Twinge , 5/10/13 11:33 PM

Plus I have real aspirations that one day muzz will make it to #1. Not having a clay game is a serious impediment to this goal.

alex , 5/10/13 11:33 PM

Never mind beating rafa, twinge, right now I'd settle for regularly fulfilling his seeding, or even making semis half the time.

alex , 5/10/13 11:36 PM

I'd even settle for muzz beating ferrer on clay, just once to prove he can do it.

alex , 5/10/13 11:38 PM

Tell that to pistol Peter
He's already shown he can get to the semis
A few more years on it and you never know.
When he plays well on it he has already been a threat..even to Rafa and Novak

Twinge , 5/10/13 11:38 PM

I'm curious about his ROS today.
Berdych was there for the taking in that respect..

Twinge , 5/10/13 11:39 PM

But Tomas was very good today although the stats on muzz were actually a little bit better.
He was more aggressive too.
But the 2nd serve struck again.
Onwards and upwards!

Twinge , 5/10/13 11:43 PM

Wait a moment, where is Chloro and Natashao?
They seemed so full of self righteous indignation.
So I thought they would surely like to give me a piece of their minds (what there is of them)
Or did I get that wrong?

Twinge , 5/11/13 12:11 AM

to paraphrase Sampras " clay is for the dirty/inferior".

novakisthebest , 5/11/13 12:47 AM

Yeah, its no wonder that Novak so desparately wants to win RG to complete his GSlam!!!

Monalysa , 5/11/13 1:01 AM

This was an expected win, and not surprised at the results, but didn't think it would be straight sets. Berdych is no slouch on clay, and with his serve in Madrid's high altitude, he had to have been the favorite to win this match.

scoretracker , 5/11/13 5:02 AM

rafafart:

RG will be lucky to have novak as a champion. His game is definitely not one-dimensional like kneedal's and he sure is not a slave to his uncle. He is his own man.

novakisthebest , 5/11/13 8:52 AM

@scoretracker

Murray's main goals have always been SW19 and no.1. He couldn't care less for the clay. Another player who don't think much of the clay - what's new!.

novakisthebest , 5/11/13 9:39 AM

Murray will never be a clay court master, and there are a few guys better than him on it obviously. But if he can at least consistently live up to his seeding at the clay tournaments(like alex said) then he will have a good chance of reaching the very top of the rankings. The issue with murray are not his losses to rafa, nole ferrer etc on clay, but to his lame losses to the lower ranked guys(like wawrinka) If he could cut those out, he will be fine.

tj600 , 5/11/13 9:59 AM

You have to be a tennis ignoramus to think that clay isn't an important part of this sport. The only reason some here don't give it any respect is because of Rafa's dominance on this surface. If it was Fed then you would see the same ones praising it to the heavens.

I also think that Murray does want to win on clay because he wants to be an all surface player. It's laughable to see people who obviously know zero about tennis speaking on his behalf.

It's also funny to see these so-called Djokovic fans talking him up for the win at RG. Your guy just got knocked out by Dimitrov, so maybe you better lower your expectations.

Nativenewyorker , 5/11/13 10:08 AM

so all of the sudden clay is not important?! Hahaha...poor people who are hiding behind their lies...I bet those of you who say it out loud don't even believe your own words...Nole's ultimate goal and the biggest priority is to win RG...the same was for the last year...and Nole is very close to it...Andy has lomg way to go...just because it seems not realistic to achieve at the moment does not justify some of his so called "fans" to trash clay and to consider it irrelevant...yeah, if you can't have the latest version of BMW let's just hide behind the false statements such as "nope, it's a bad car anyway...I don't want it"...hahahaha... ridiculous...BTW, why is Serena playing clay court tourneys?! Why does she want to win RG this year? She has already proved herself on other surfaces, why clay?...I can't belive someone saying Murray or Nole couldn't care less for clay...very funny...and ignorant...

natashao , 5/11/13 12:15 PM

RT @NeilHarmanTimes: "Murray reflective, honest, knows he didn't convert opportunities says 'going in right direction' Wishes me good luck with my book. Nice lad"

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 1:18 PM

The key was the first set. Andy was perhaps the (slightly) better player & certainly created more break point chances (6 to TB's 2) but he couldn't capitalise on them.
And when he did, couldn't sustain it by holding serve.
Berdych was serving at 51% in that set yet Andy had a slightly lower return points % on 2nd serve Tomas had. His return game was a little off, perhaps due to the conditions.
Overall Stats wise he should have edged the set and it could have changed the tone of the match. Maybe.
But Berdych ate up Andy's 2nd serve (57% to Andy's 36%) in the second and that was that.
I just think that Berdych knew he was the favourite and could beat Andy.
Although there were definite big 4 moments from Andy, Tomas held firm and
Gave as good as he got, he's a very, very good player when confident.
Anyway that was a much better Andy than any since the 2nd week of the AO.
If he gets through the first week of Rome and RG, he could still cause trouble.

Twinge , 5/11/13 1:42 PM

Oops I meant since MIAMI
;-)

Twinge , 5/11/13 2:13 PM

Glad I missed that one, not deliberately btw, was peaking at live scores every now and then...WORSE, WORSE!
@Twingey@1.42 Cheers for that
@alex, hear, hear about your clay court comments
@chlorostoma, am baffled by your comment. Twingey has never insulted me! Teased yes, but that's quite a different kettle of fish.
