• Tomic handed replacement for bad-dad coach

    5/9/13 3:34 PM | Johan Lindahl
Tomic handed replacement for bad-dad coach His violence-prone bad dad may be banned from ATP events as well as the upcoming French Open, but Bernard Tomic won't be lacking for a coach on the clay as Tennis Australia rode to his rescue.

The No. 49, whose off-the-rails father John faces a Madrid court next week after a streetside beat-down administered to his son's French hitting partner, will be looked after by former player Josh Eagle in the short term.

Both Tomics have gone to ground after the violent head-butting incident last weekend outside the player hotel for the Madrid Masters. John Tomic is charged with causing injury, but says he was acting in self-defence. "From our perspective now, it's about knowing that we have to do what we can for Bernard for the upcoming events," Todd Woodbridge head of tennis for the federation, told the AP.

Eagle is said to be stepping in as soon as the Rome event, which starts on Sunday. In Paris, the 20-year-old will have not only Eagle but also Davis Cup captain Patrick Rafter onside.

"This is nothing to do with Bernard. This is John (Tomic's) issue that has to be dealt with," he said. "But obviously we've to get him focused on playing tennis over the next couple of months and put this aside," said Woodbridge.
