Verdasco making another Madrid run, Wawrinka also wins Fernando Verdasco outlasts Milos Raonic in three sets on Tuesday in Madrid. Verdasco is joined in the third round by Stanislas Wawrinka, who remains in outstanding form on clay.

Fernando Verdasco picked up his biggest win of the season by upsetting Milos Raonic 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7) in two hours and 35 minutes during second-round action at the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday. His victory may have been upstaged by Grigor Dimitrov's stunner of Novak Djokovic later in the day, but the Spanish faithful won't soon forget this one.

After taking the first set, Verdasco--a quarterfinalist last year--donated serve twice in the second and lost it without much of a fight. Raonic lost only six points in four service games throughout set two despite putting in just 50 percent of his first deliveries.

That only set the stage for a dramatic third, in which Raonic fought off four break points and Verdasco saved one. The 46th-ranked Spaniard trailed 4-1 in the ensuing tiebreaker, but he regained the mini-break at 3-4 with a scorching backhand pass. Raonic survived match points at 5-6 (with an ace) and 6-7 (after a double-fault at 6-6) before Verdasco clinched victory on his third chance when the Canadian erred on a forehand.

Joining Verdasco in the third round is Stanislas Wawrinka, who took care of Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday. Wawrinka held eight of nine service games and broke Giraldo four times to advance in just 53 minutes. The 15th-seeded Swiss dropped a mere two service points in the entire first set before closing the match out in style with an impressive return game at 5-3 in the second.

Wawrinka is coming of a quarterfinal showing in Monte-Carlo and a title in Oeiras, with wins over Andy Murray and David Ferrer in the process. The world No. 15 will battle Dimitrov on Thursday for a place in the last eight.
