Nadal untested, reaches round of 16 Two-time Madrid champion Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round with a straight-sets dismissal of France's Benoit Paire. The World No. 5 is through to face either Nicolas Almagro or Mikhail Youzhny in the next round.

World No. 5 Rafael Nadal made a successful start to the Mutua Madrid Open, having ousted France's Benoit Paire in straight sets. The 26-year-old Spaniard, who looks to win his third title at the event, held 100% of his service games during the 6-3, 6-4 match.

"That's an important victory today," Nadal explained. "Each match in this kind of tournament is very demanding from the first round. He was a very uncomfortable opponent. He makes you play quite badly. He doesn't give you any rhythm. He has one of the best backhands in the circuit, without any doubt."

By virtue of his second-round victory, Nadal improves his season record to 27-2.

He is scheduled to meet either fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro or former world No. 8 Mikhail Youzhny in the next round.

Youzhny is always a handful

I was more concerned about Almagro. He has the game to give Rafa trouble even though he has never beaten him. Rafa was able to get by Paire who doesn't have the weapons to trouble him. He wasn't at his best, but didn't have to be.

Youzhny is a head case. He can play some good tennis, but he isn't mentally strong. I only saw a bit of their match, so I can't say if Almagro played poorly or Youzhny was good.

I think Rafa will raise his level of play with every match. I did see that his serving stats were very good.
