    Monaco ousts Tipsarevic, Haas advances Argentina's Juan Monaco is through to the second round after dismissing tournament seed Janko Tipsarevic. He is joined in round two by veteran Tommy Haas, who defeated Italy's Andreas Seppi in straight sets.

    Juan Monaco made a successful start in Madrid, having upended 9th seed Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets. The 29-year-old Argentine converted three of 4 break points through an hour and 41 minutes of play. Tipsarevic struggled with his second serve, winning just 8 of 26 points.

    Monaco is through to take on South Africa's Kevin Anderson in the next round.

    (13) Tommy Haas def. Andreas Seppi 6-1, 6-2

    Thirteenth seed Tommy Haas continued his winning ways with a straight-sets drubbing of Italy's Andreas Seppi. The recent BMW Open champion needed less than an hour to record the victory, 6-1, 6-2. Haas completed the match with four service breaks and eight consecutive games held.

    He will take on either Marcos Baghdatis or Tommy Robredo in the second round.
