Big-serving Isner advances, Lopez ousted John Isner was in outstanding form in his first match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, with the American putting on a serving clinic.

    John Isner def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 7-6(8)

American John Isner got off to an impressive start on the fast clay of Madrid. Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez was completely helpless on the return and a shaky service game while Garcia-Lopez served to force the tiebreaker cost him the set.

The second set was all about Isner's serve. The American grew more comfortable as his continued to go uncontested and even found his way into net for some exquisite volleying.

Isner will take on another Spaniard, Pablo Andujar, in the second round.

    Daniel Gimeno-Traver def. Feliciano Lopez 2-6, 6-4, 6-2

Since making the finals in Memphis, Madrid resident Feliciano Lopez has had nothing but first round losses to mourn. And the Spanish world No. 45 had another disappointment after a strong start against countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Gimeno-Traver finished the match with 9 aces and 3 double faults, securing 3 breaks of the Lopez serve. The world No. 52 will take on No. 8 seed Richard Gasquet in the second round.
