Madrid No. 10 seed Marin Cilic is out of the tournament on the first day of play, losing to Spaniard Pablo Andujar. Czech veteran Radek Stepanek breezed past top Aussie Bernard Tomic.
Pablo Andujar def. Marin Cilic (10) 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-1
Marin Cilic's woes continued on Sunday, as the top Croat lost to world No. 92 Pablo Andujar. For the first set and much of the second, Cilic looked to be in control of the match. After taking the first in a tiebreaker, Cilic held serve easily until 4-5 in the second when he served to stay in the set. Out of nowhere, he dropped serve, leveling the match at a set apiece.
The third set was a disaster for Cilic, who won his first service game and not a single one after that.
Andujar awaits the winner of John Isner and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round.
Radek Stepanek def. Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-2
With controversy swirling around the Tomic camp, due to the arrest of father John for assault, Bernard stepped on court against a level-headed Radek Stepanek.
The Czech man was never truly challenged in this match. Tomic showed that he continues to have difficulty adjusting to playing on the dirt and Stepanek took advantage of the relatively quick courts and high altitude in Madrid which suits his serve-and-volley game.
Stepanek finished the match with 100% break point conversions -- he went three for three against Tomic's serve and staved off all three against his own.
