  • Wawrinka rolls over Ferrer for Portugal Open title

Wawrinka rolls over Ferrer for Portugal Open title Stanislas Wawrinka crushes David Ferrer in straight sets to capture the Oeiras title on Sunday. It is the fourth ATP title of Wawrinka's career.

The year had been a story of near-misses for Stanislas Wawrinka. That was until Sunday at the Portugal Open.

Wawrinka, who had lost heartbreakers to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open and to the Czech Republic in Davis Cup, captured the Oeiras title by defeating David Ferrer 6-1, 6-4. The Swiss needed just one hour and four minutes for the fourth ATP tournament triumph of his career.

This one was one-way traffic right from the start. Wawrinka won the fist five games of the match before Ferrer finally got on the scoreboard with a service hold. The world No. 16 promptly served out the opener with ease and converted set point when his opponent erred on a backhand lob attempt.

Ferrer at least managed to make the second set somewhat competitive. The fourth-ranked Spaniard took care of his first four service games, but it was all over when he cracked at 4-4. Wawrinka, who lost a shocking total of only six points on serve in the entire match, wasted no time finishing off the proceedings at love. He clinched championship point when Ferrer sent a forehand well past the baseline.

"Today I'm really, really happy." said the victor. "For me it was a perfect match."

Wawrinka improved to 4-7 lifetime in ATP finals (all four titles at 250-point events) and 4-7 lifetime against Ferrer (2-5 on clay). Ferrer is now 20-18 in 38 career title matches.
