  • Wawrinka, Robredo advance to Portugal Open quarters

    5/2/13 8:03 PM | Ricky Dimon
Wawrinka, Robredo advance to Portugal Open quarters Stanislas Wawrinka overcomes Albert Ramos in three sets on Thursday in Oeiras. Wawrinka is joined in the quarterfinals by Tommy Robredo, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Robin Haase.

    (2) Stanislas Wawrinka d. Albert Ramos 1-6, 6-3, 6-4

Wawrinka's Portugal Open campaign got off to a remarkably slow start on Thursday but he managed to battle past Ramos in one hour and 45 minutes. The Swiss lost the first three games of the match before holding for 1-3, but that only delayed the inevitable in a disastrous opening set. Wawrinka dropped serve again at 1-4 before Ramos closed out the opener on his own racket.

The rest of the way, however, it was almost all Wawrinka. Oeiras' No. 2 seed used one break in each of the last two sets to earn his victory. Ramos saw no break chances throughout the second and most of the third until the final game of the day. The 57th-ranked Spaniard saved four match points at 3-5 then led 0-40 on Wawrinka's serve in the 10th game. Ramos, though, could not convert any of this three opportunities and Wawrinka won five straight points to clinch victory.

    (8) Tommy Robredo d. (Q) Robin Haase 6-4, 6-4

Robredo maintained his fine form by taking out Haase in one hour and 24 minutes on Thursday. The 31-year-old Spaniard, back up to No. 38 in the world following a title in Casablanca and a quarterfinal run in Barcelona, broke his opponent four times in 10 return games.

Two breaks in each set made the difference for Robredo. This week's No. 8 seed gave back a break at 4-3 in the second only to watch Haase return the favor at 4-4. The 74th-ranked Dutchman had a 0-30 opening in the ensuing game, but Robredo won four consecutive points to hold off Haase's comeback attempt. Next up for Robredo in the quarterfinals is either Andreas Seppi or Alejandro Falla.
