• Confusion of Federer status at Basel Indoors

    5/1/13 10:49 PM | Johan Lindahl
Confusion of Federer status at Basel Indoors Basel ATP tournament director Roger Brennwald seems to be playing a high-stakes poker game with the management of Roger Federer.

The Swiss star is set to make an appearance in the field at the upcoming edition of the Swiss Indoors - but apparently without a long-term contract.

Reports circulating would suggest that world No. 2 Federer is skipping his hometown event, which is not the case after he confirmed his participation several weeks ago in a newspaper interview.

But TD Brennwald seems to be pushing for a long-term appearance deal for the local tennis icon, an offer which the Federer management has so far repulsed. The event has announced the appearance of Rafael Nadal in Basel for the first time in a decade as a co-headliner to Federer, who has saved the box office for the past ten years or more and won the tournament five times.

But Zurich's Tages Anzeiger stirred the pot with a provocative interview with Brennwald. "We have made an offer to him, which he refused. We have submitted a second offer, (an answer to which) has not been received. We cannot pay a seven-figure appearance fee, for a start and we have deadlines.

Brennwald is annoyed at dealing with Federer's American agent Tony Godsick instead of speaking directly to his fellow Swiss. "I've never seen anything like it. Djokovic or Murray contact you if I want. I have spoken personally with Nadal. But with Roger it's not possible.

Meanwhile the tournament website is full of news about the double bill of Federer and Nadal, along with defending champion Juan Martin Del Potro who beat Federer in the 2012 final.

Federer is being a diva.

Maybe they are paying Rafa more appearance fees.

The golden halo is definitely becoming a tad tarnished.
