Gulbis, Dolgopolov breeze through in Munich Ernests Gulbis and Alexandr Dolgopolov were in fine form to begin their 2013 campaigns at the BMW Open in Munich.

Ernests Gulbis def. Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-2

Latvia's Ernests Gulbis posted another straight-set victory over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen. This first-round encounter marked their fourth career meeting; the Finn has yet to win a set off Gulbis.

Nieminen had his chances, especially in the second set in which he got five looks to break the Gulbis serve, but the Latvian fought each of them off and finished the match with a pair of breaks of the Nieminen serve.

The win sends Gulbis into the second round, where he will face German veteran Tommy Haas.

Alexandr Dolgopolov def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-2

Alexandr Dolgopolov clearly dominated this battle of the Ukrainians. Countryman Sergiy Stakhovsky has had a positively dismal 2013 season, with most of his decent results coming on the Challenger circuit.

Dolgopolov, the No. 5 seed, faced just one break point in the brief match, a testament to the poor quality of Stakhovsky's return game -- Dolgopolov served at just 44 percent for the match.

The No. 5 seed converted on a trio of break points, one in the first set and a pair in the second to seal the win. He will take on Dmitry Tursunov in round two.
