    4/30/13 12:09 AM | Cheryl Murray
Davydenko out, Brands through in Munich Russia's Nikolay Davydenko suffered an early loss at the hands of Ivan Dodig on the first day of play at the BMW Open in Munich.

Ivan Dodig def. Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 6-4

It was another rocky start for Nikolay Davydenko, with the Russian bowing out in the first round in Munich after a pair of second-round exits in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Dodig, the world No. 56 from Croatia, was broken once in the first set, but he secured a pair of service breaks to take the one-set lead. Davydenko was unable to convert on the single break point he had in the second set and the Croat ran off with the straight-set victory.

The win sets up a second-round showdown with compatriot Marin Cilic.

Daniel Brands def. Tobias Kamke 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

This pair of Germans put on a good show for the Munich crowd, with lower-ranked Tobias Kamke (No. 76) taking the first set before Brands took control in the second.

Brands ended the match with 16 aces; he staved off eight of the 10 break points against him and converted on four to secure his spot in the second round, where he awaits the winner of Gael Monfils and Jurgen Melzer.
