  • Garcia-Lopez ousts Mayer to reach Bucharest title match

    4/27/13 10:14 PM | Ricky Dimon
Garcia-Lopez ousts Mayer to reach Bucharest title match Guillermo Garcia-Lopez takes out former champion Florian Mayer in the Bucharest semifinals on Saturday. Garcia-Lopez will go up against Lukas Rosol for the title.

An all-unseeded final is in the cards after Guillermo Garcia-Lopez upset Florian Mayer 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the semis of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Saturday afternoon. Garcia-Lopez needed two hours and nine minutes to set up a surprising title match against Lukas Rosol.

Service breaks were the story of the first set, with three going to Garcia-Lopez. The Spaniard donated his own serve twice, but he went three for three on break-point opportunities. The opener ended in appropriate fashion, with Garcia-Lopez earning a scalp of the Mayer serve at 5-4.

The world No. 87 had won all three of his previous matches in three sets this week and he was not about to end the streak. Instead, Mayer fought back in the second and served much better while also doing a superior job on second-serve points. The 29th-ranked German broke twice before serving out the set in routine fashion at 5-4.

This one all came down to the fifth game of the final set, with Garcia-Lopez serving at 2-2. Mayer had a 0-40 opportunity but squandered his lead and watched his opponent come back and hold. Having failed to break, Bucharest's No. 5 seed was never the same. Mayer dropped serve without much of a fight one game later and he provided little resistance with Garcia-Lopez serving for the match at 5-3. A backhand return in the net on match point ended Mayer's bid for a second title at this event (he previously triumphed in 2011).

"I'm really happy right now," Garcia-Lopez assured. "It's been a long time since I played in a final. I feel really good. Every match here, I've played three sets. So that makes me confident because I've been winning the matches in the last set."

He will contest his first final since Bangkok in 2010 (d. Jarkko Nieminen) on Sunday against Lukas Rosol. Garcia-Lopez is 2-1 lifetime in ATP title matches.
