Tipsarevic opens with win, Mayer gets past Goffin Janko Tipsarevic begins in Bucharest with a straight-set victory over Santiago Giraldo on Thursday. Tipsarevic is joined in the quarterfinals by Florian Mayer, a three-set winner over David Goffin.

    (1) Janko Tipsarevic d. Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-3

Tipsarevic was initially going to take some time off after an early loss in Monte-Carlo, but he decided that would not be necessary. Perhaps he was right. Tipsarevic kicked off his BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy campaign during second-round action on Thursday and he cruised past Giraldo in one hour and 21 minutes. The top-seeded Serb struck five aces and saved eight of nine break points to set up a quarterfinal clash against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

A straightforward first set saw Tipsarevic use a single break to take it. The world No. 10 dropped a mere three points in five service games to consolidate his advantage with ease. Giraldo dropped serve in the second game of set two and squandered his first eight break-point opportunities, but he finally converted his ninth chance before leveling the score at 3-3. The 76th-ranked Colombian, however, promptly donated serve twice in succession to end his comeback attempt.

    (5) Florian Mayer d. David Goffin 7-6(2), 1-6, 6-3

Mayer, the 2011 Bucharest champion, held off Goffin in one hour and 57 minutes to book a quarterfinal spot on Thursday afternoon. A back-and-forth affair began with a competitive first set in which one break for each man was exchanged en route to a tiebreaker. Mayer, who had rolled over Goffin last month in Indian Wells, picked up the pace and dominated the decider seven points two two.

Goffin made a quick recovery in the second. The 62nd-ranked Belgian earned two consecutive breaks and raced to a 5-0 advantage before his opponent finally got on the scoreboard. Goffin did not face a single break point in the middle frame of play and a routine hold closed it out at 5-1. One break also decided the final set, and this time it went to Mayer. The world No. 29 converted his only break-point opportunity and saved all three of Goffin's chances to get back on serve before sealing the deal at 5-3. Next up for Mayer is Victor Hanescu, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Mikhail Youzhny.
