  • Paradorn hopes to make the change to pro golf

    4/25/13 4:08 AM | Johan Lindahl
Paradorn hopes to make the change to pro golf Former Thai player Paradorn Srichaphan is trying to tee off a golf career which he hopes will take him from a professional in one sport to the same in another.

The one-time top ten Asian played his last match in 2007, finally retiring with a wrist injury.

In the intervening years one of his nation's most recognisable sportsmen has tried his hand at an Italian restaurant in Bangkok and a motorcycle racing career among other things. Like Marat Safin in Russia, he's also dabbled in the murky world of Thai politics.

Now it's pro golf on the to-do list for the soon-to-be 34-year-old, who is hoping to kick-start his new venture by playing regularly on the Southeast Asia's ASEAN PGA Tour in his region. Paradorn only started chasing the little while ball two years ago but is not lacking in confidence on the links.

"To make a living (from golf) is not my goal," he said. "My goal is to be the first Asian athlete changing from another sport to play professional golf."

If he makes the grade, Paradorn could follow on from the example of Australian ex-tennis player Scott Draper, who turned pro a few years ago after quitting the courts. "He was the first one (to make the switch). I want to do the same and create history for a Thai athlete," said Paradorn.

Golf is a popular activity for current tennis players, with Rafael Nadal a keen amateur and Andy Murray coached by golf-mad former tennis pro Ivan Lendl.
