  • Ferrer loses out on his biggest Barcelona chance

    4/25/13 4:39 PM | Johan Lindahl
Ferrer loses out on his biggest Barcelona chance Disappointed David Ferrer was kicking himself over missing possibly the chance of his life to gain at least a psychological edge over longtime rival Rafael Nadal.

But the 31-year-old world No. 4 Ferrer, playing for the first time in his career as a top seed ahead of Nadal, put in a pitiful performance in choppy wind to exit in his opening match at the Barcelona Open.

Instead of at least keeping pace with seven-time Barcelona champion Nadal - who won his second-round contest over Argentine Carlos Berlocq - the feisty Ferrer must bury his sorrow at losing out on a possible golden opportunity.

Ferrer lost to Russian qualifier Dmitry Tursunov who still could not figure out how he had executed a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 upset on the Spaniard's home clay. "I tried to keep up a fast pace and not give him any time. He has the advantage over me on clay," Tursunov said of his match strategy. "This was certainly not his best match. he's not played a lot recently and you need time to get back into rhythm."

Ferrer could only voice his regrets after going out in the tournament where he has played and lost four finals - three of them to Nadal.

"I couldn't seem to hurt him with my shots. it was a strange match mentally and physically. This was a match to forget - probably one of the worst I've played in recent years.

"Each year it will become more difficult for me to win the tournament. I came back well in the second set but the third got away from me very quickly, I really wasn't competitive."
