  • Tipsarevic, Fognini back in action in Bucharest

    4/21/13 3:35 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tipsarevic, Fognini back in action in Bucharest Janko Tipsarevic and Gilles Simon headline this week's Bucharest event as the top two seeds. They are joined in a relatively strong 250-point field by Mikhail Youzhny, Fabio Fognini, and Gael Monfils.

Janko Tipsarevic's break from tennis did not last long.

Tipsarevic, who vowed to take some time off after his run of bad form continued in Monte-Carlo, accepted a wild card into this week's BDR Nastase Tiriac Trophy and he headlines the field as the No. 1 seed. Joining the field for one of the early French Open tune-up tournaments are Gilles Simon, Andreas Seppi, and Mikhail Youzhny. All four players have byes to the second round as the top four seeds.

Monte-Carlo semifinalist Fabio Fognini is also jumping right back into action in Bucharest. The Italian finds himself in a loaded quarter of the draw that also includes Simon, Jarkko Nieminen, and Gael Monfils. Fognini and Monfils have to face each other in the very first round, while Nieminen--a Monte-Carlo quarterfinalist--could meet Simon in round two.

The rest of the bracket is not quite as tough, although Tipsarevic could have asked for a more navigable path. His opener will come against either Xavier Malisse or Santiago Giraldo and Horacio Zeballos looms large as a potential quarterfinal opponent. Zeballos is the only man to beat Rafael Nadal this year heading into the Monte-Carlo final, and he did it on clay in Vina del Mar.

Quarters two and three are both wide open. Youzhny could be challenged by local Romanian hope Victor Hanescu in the last 16 or by David Goffin in the quarterfinals. Seppi, meanwhile, awaits either Lukas Rosol or Gilles Muller. Rosol and Muller also went head-to-head in the Miami first round. Seppi's nearest seed is Viktor Troicki, while Youzhny is in the same quarter as Florian Mayer.
