World No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga breezed into the quarterfinal after taking out veteran Jurgen Melzer in straight sets. The Frenchman is through to take on Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka, who upset World No. 2 Andy Murray.
World No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made the final eight in Monte-Carlo after defeating Austria's Jurgen Melzer in straight sets. The 28-year-old Frenchman tallied 7 aces and four service breaks in less than an hour.
"It's difficult to assess my game because he was not really playing his best," confessed Tsonga, who completed the 6-3, 6-0 drubbing with 15 of 18 first-service points captured. "But I'm happy I was able to do the job. When you play tennis, you always try for perfection. Of course, sometimes you can't reach that."
Tsonga ended the day with just 10 points surrendered on serve.
He is scheduled to take on 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka for a place in the semifinals.
