• Nadal breezes into third round in Monte-Carlo

Nadal breezes into third round in Monte-Carlo Defending champion Rafael Nadal got off to a quick start against Australian Marinko Matosevic as the Spaniard moves into the third round.

Rafael Nadal had two shaky games in the second set, but otherwise it was smooth-sailing for the eight-time champion, who dispatched Marinko Matosevic 6-1, 6-2.

The first set of this second-round encounter featured a Rafael Nadal that did not need to get out of second gear. Matosevic had all kinds of trouble managing the Spaniard's topspin and sent plenty of balls sailing past the baseline.

The Australian, who is ranked 54th in the world, didn't win a game until he served at 0-4. Nadal held him to that single game to dish up a breadstick.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Matosevic exploded out of the blocks in the second set. The underdog broke Nadal for the first time in the first game and held easily for a 2-0 lead. Nadal faced another break point in his next service game, but the Spaniard's forehand came to the rescue and he righted the ship.

Once Nadal held, Matosevic went back to playing nervous tennis again. The No. 3 seed reeled off six games in a row, with his down-the-line forehand leading the way to take the comfortable win.

Nadal will take on Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round.

Thanks Cheryl. Good job, Rafa. 1 down, 4 to go for that sweet 9th straight MC crown.....

Kohly will be a less accommodating proposition........

Rafa can't drop his guard against Kohls so I'm glad that Matosevic gave him something to think about if only for 2 games.

#Vamos Rafa

RT @Ringham7: "Rafa Nadal, natty in broad blue & white stripes at his presser, happy after win v Matosevic. 'Played with right feelings doing right things'"

I love it when Rafa plays early, I feel much more relaxed watching the others.

"Patrolling the red clay with the confidence of a man romping around his backyard, Nadal registered his 43rd consecutive win in Monte Carlo, raising his record in the Principality to 45-1. The eight-time champion has ruled Monte Carlo nearly as long as Prince Albert II has reigned in Monaco: He began his winning streak here in 2005, just six weeks into Albert?s reign, and spent much of today?s match asserting his authority in baseline rallies."

Rafa's match didn't start until 4:00 AM my time, so I woke up today to see the good news. I will have to wait for the replay on the tennis channel later today.

Nice to see Rafa coming out in his first match and doing well!

Rafa on FB

Today I received French police badge! Thanks!

Even the French gendarme are Rafans.

nadline , 4/17/13 10:26 PM

What does that mean, nadline? Hope it means he can flash it anywhere in France and receive all the privileges accorded the police such as right of way and commandeering any car at will!

Matosevic was playing so boring that even Rafa fell asleep for two games. I want Murray in the semis just because to show him if Rafa is healthy and around who will the winner be. Was very easy to win US Open without him. Vamoss..

I finally got to see the replay of the match on the tennis channel. They didn't start replaying the matches until 6:00 PM. Usually they replay it earlier.

It was obvious that Matosevic had no weapons to challenge Rafa. I guess Rafa did get bored and went to sleep at the beginning of the second set. But he woke up to gain control and never looked back.

Rafa got to work off some rust and get his legs under him, but this match isn't a good indicator of where he's at after some weeks off. I think Kohls will give him more of a match.

Rafa laughs off Matosevic sabotaging his water bottles sters-water-bottles/

nadline , 4/18/13 9:56 AM

That link also brought up another hilarious moment in Rome '09 when he knocked his bottles over himself and stopped showboating to put them back in place. lol.

And the all-time classic, at the same tornament when Soderling totally lost the plot and argued for several minutes with the umpire on the way to being defeated 6:1 6:0

ed251137 , 4/18/13 10:13 AM

That was funny. I wondered why Rafa was laughing on the changeover. The camera shot was blocked by his bag, so I couldn't tell.
