Richard Gasquet recovered from a lull in the second set to dispatch of countryman Benoit Paire for a spot in the Monte-Carlo third round.
After it appeared he would advance in straight sets, Richard Gasquet had a mental lapse in the second set before defeating Benoit Paire 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Gasquet was in full stride as the match began, second up on a packed day at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Paire, who is capable of playing exciting tennis, was docile, pummeled especially by the Gasquet forehand.
Gasquet went up a break in the second set and appeared on course for an easy win, when suddenly Paire found his game. Gasquet's backhand, which had been setting up points nicely for him in the opening frame, started to go astray.
Paire earned thebreak back and secured another to level the match at a set a piece.
Fortunately for the Gasquet camp, the No. 7 seed came back in the third composed. He had a bit of a stutter in his opening service game of the deciding set, getting in a 0-30 hole, but a Paire forehand clipped the tape for 15-30. A steadier Gasquet went on to hold in that game and take all but one of the others in the set.
