  • Nadal draws Tipsarevic, Verdasco in his section of Monte Carlo

    4/15/13 12:48 AM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal draws Tipsarevic, Verdasco in his section of Monte Carlo Eight-time defending Monte Carlo champion Rafael Nadal will try for a record-breaking ninth title in the principality, as he faces a tricky second round match.

The early rounds of the Monte Carlo Masters could prove to be more difficult for Rafael Nadal than his quarterfinal prospects. Nadal drew No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic, who has been in positively miserable form this year.

Likely, Nadal will face No. 11 seed Gilles Simon instead of the Serb, and though the crowd will surely be pulling for the Frenchman, Nadal hasn't had much difficulty with that particular match-up. Simon's one win in 6 meetings came on the lighting quick indoor courts of the old Madrid tournament.

But Nadal is likely to face down compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the second round. Verdasco won their last meeting, a miserable match for Nadal on the blue clay of Madrid last year. Still, Nadal owns at 13-1 head-to-head over Verdasco and Monte Carlo remains Nadal's best tournament.

Nadal comes into Monte Carlo with a pair of clay court titles and the Indian Wells Masters crown. He also comes in well-rested, having taken weeks off since his run in the California desert. Anything but an easy run through his section would be a shock.
