  • Wawrinka, Paire advance to Casablanca quarters

    4/10/13 8:00 PM | Ricky Dimon
Wawrinka, Paire advance to Casablanca quarters Stanislas Wawrinka overcomes Blaz Kavcic in three sets on Wednesday in Casablanca. Wawrinka is joined in the quarterfinals by doubles partner Benoit Paire, a three-set winner over Aljaz Bedene.

    (1) Stanislas Wawrinka d. Blaz Kavcic 4-6, 6-2, 6-1

Wawrinka got off to a slow start in his Grand Prix Hassan II opener on Wednesday afternoon, but he stormed past Kavcic in one hour and 34 minutes. Kavcic, coming off a first-round win over Mehdi Ziadi while Wawrinka earned a bye, cruised through the opening set without facing a break point. As a result, one break of his own allowed the 85th-ranked Slovenian to serve things out at 5-4.

The rest of the way, however, it was all Wawrinka. The top-seeded Swiss dropped serve once more in the second, but he completely dominated his opponent to the tune of three service breaks. An even more comfortable third set saw Wawrinka drop only five points in four service games. He closed out Kavcic with the match on his racket at 5-1, booking a quarterfinal clash against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

    (4) Benoit Paire d. Aljaz Bedene 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

Paire also needed to make a comeback, this one from an even bigger deficit than that of Wawrinka. A back-and-forth match saw Bedene lead by a set and a break at one point, but the underdog Slovenian could not hang on as his opponent recovered to get the job done after two hours and three minutes. Paire actually got off to a fast start, but he gave back a break advantage twice in the first set and lost four games in a row to end the opener. With momentum in hand, Bedene surged to 3-1 in the second.

When the world No. 90 failed to hold for 4-1, however, the tide turned. Paire earned two breaks to storm ahead then delivered a clutch hold at 5-4 to set up a decider. This time the fourth-seeded Frenchman did not look back, as he consolidated a break the whole way and even broke again to finish off the proceedings in style. Bedene double-faulted on match point at 3-5. Paire awaits either Tommy Robredo or Tobias Kamke in the quarterfinals.
