• Almagro, Haas lead field in Houston

    Almagro, Haas lead field in Houston World No. 12 Nicolas Almagro returns to competition for the second week of April, as the ATP World Tour makes a stop in Houston for the US Men’s Clay Court Championship. The Spaniard is seeded first at the tournament.

    World No. 12 Nicolas Almagro is back on court after reaching the round of 16 at the Masters 1000 Miami. The 27-year-old Spaniard won consecutive matches before falling to France’s Richard Gasquet in three sets. Almagro is 14-6 entering into his first US Men’s Clay Court Championship.

    The top seed leads a competitive half of the draw that includes: (4) Sam Querrey, (6) Fernando Verdasco and (7) Paolo Lorenzi. Other players in the section are wildcard Rhyne williams, Guido Pella, Somdev Devvarman, wildcard Steve Johnson, Flavio Cipolla and Ruben-Ramirez Hidalgo.

    After a first-round bye, Almagro is scheduled to begin his run against either former World No. 4 James Blake or former World No. 7 Gael Monfils.

    World No. 14 Tommy Haas headlines the bottom half of the draw alongside fellow seeds (3) Juan Monaco, (5) John Isner and (8) Michael Russell. Additional entrants in the section include: Martin Alund, Josselin Ouanna, Tim Smyczek, Ryan Harrison, wildcard Jack Sock and former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

    Following an opening-round bye, Haas will open his campaign against Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis or Canada’s Jesse Levine.
