Djokovic takes care of Isner in Davis Cup opener Novak Djokovic defeats John Isner in straight sets on Friday to kick off the Davis Cup tie between Serbia and the United States. The visiting Serbs lead 1-0 heading into the second singles rubber.

Serbia leads 1-0 in its Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against the United States after Novak Djokovic handled John Isner 7-6(5), 6-2, 7-5 on Friday afternoon in Boise, Idaho. Djokovic recovered from a break down in the first set and never looked back as he prevailed in two hours and 10 minutes.

Playing on the road and in fast conditions at high altitude, Djokovic got off to a slow start. The world No. 1 double-faulted twice then donated two unforced error's to his opponent's cause as he dropped serve at 1-1. Isner, however, gave it back at 3-2 when Djokovic capitalized on multiple looks at second serves. From there both players held en route to a tiebreaker.

Not surprisingly, a single mini-break decided the entire thing. It came right away with Isner serving at 0-1, when the 6'9'' American erred at the end of a short baseline rally. Isner eventually saved set points on serve at 3-6 and 4-6, but Djokovic took care of his ensuing service point.

Having adjusted to all aspects of the atmosphere, Djokovic was off to the races. The Serb missed several deuce opportunities on Isner's serve to begin the second set, but he broke easily in both the third and seventh games. Djokovic closed it out with a love service hold at 5-2.

Isner got his game back in shape for the third, but it was too little too late. The world No. 23 held comfortably on the way to a 5-4 advantage, but Djokovic answered--emphatically--when it mattered most. In fact, Djokovic won the last 12 points of the match, with a hold at love, a break at love, and then another hold at love to clinch victory.

The United States' Sam Querrey now faces a virtual must-win situation against Viktor Troicki in the second singles rubber.
