• Canada and Italy tied going into Saturday's doubles

Canada and Italy tied going into Saturday's doubles It was a mixed bag for the favored Canadians in the opening day of play, with the hosts dropping the first rubber but winning the second.

It was Milos Raonic to the rescue after Vasek Pospisil lost the first singles rubber to Andreas Seppi in a 5-set heartbreaker. The Italian clawed his way back from a two-set deficit to pull out the 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win.

Seppi was tight in the opening two sets, allowing Pospisil to sneak out the 2-sets lead with a handful of mistakes and loss of focus. Seppi was a different player in the third set, however. The Italian pressed Pospisil harder, making him work to win points and he tired the Canadian out.

With Italy holding a 1-0 lead, there was plenty of pressure on Raonic. But the top Canadian was more than up to the task.

The sets were close, as Raonic's often are, but the Canadian was tough mentally when it counted, defeating Fabio Fognini 6-4, 7-6(4), 7-5.

The Canadians will now look to their world-class doubles veteran Daniel Nestor to lead the way in Saturday's crucial doubles match, with partner Vasek Pospisil against the Italian team of Daniele Bracciali and Paolo Lorenzi.
