Were he a drinker, Rafael Nadal would be the Spanish athlete that his countrymen would most like to sit down and chat with over a beer.
That's the result of an off-the-wall opinion poll - commissioned by Spanish brewers, of course - which resulted in another "honour" for the king of clay.
The former No. 1, now down to fifth as he prepares for his annual assault on the red dirt starting with the Monte Carlos Masters in little more than a week, earned 22 per cent of the preferences in the informal survey.
The poll asked participants to vote for the athlete with whom they would like to have beer. It is apparently nothing special for Nadal to triumph in the drinkers' survey - he also won it the last two years.
Trailing 11-time Grand Slam winner Nadal in the survey was Spanish national football team and Real Madrid’s captain Iker Casillas, followed by Formula One driver Fernando Alonso (19 and 12 per cent preferences respectively). The online survey comprised 2000 people aged 18 or older.
Nadal's popularity among beer fans can only be rivalled by his ongoing connection with hard spirits, as spokesman for a drink responsibly campaign from Barcardi, the rum and liquor conglomerate.
