  • Murray sacrifices banana aversion in search of success

    3/29/13 11:54 PM | Johan Lindahl
Murray sacrifices banana aversion in search of success As he lifts his tennis towards a permanent place in the ATP elite, Andy Murray has managed to overcome one of his longtime phobias - the Scot is now a regular consumer of bananas.

The energy-giving source of potassium has long been a favourite on-court snack for players for decades. But Murray, who has long disavowed what he once labelled a "useless" fruit, has now come around the the realisation that every little bit helps in the war that is tennis.

He now chomps on the fruit between games just like the rest of his tennis peers. That kind of dedication is also combined with often painful post-match ice baths, which might go some way to explaining the hour or more he has been taking at the Miami Masters to come to media after a win.

"A lot of times the press guys ask why I take an hour and a half to come to the interview room, but if you don’t do the massage and the ice baths and the stretching and the cooling down and the eating, and your opponent is doing that stuff, they already have an advantage.

"I am way better at all that than I was even two or three years ago,” he told London's Daily Telegraph.

Murray also credits his base in downtown Miami for contributing to his training regime with Florida-based coach Ivan Lendl. “Everything’s really close here and I don’t have to worry about traffic or bad food or weather.

"When I'm in the UK I can sometimes plan to practise and then it rains and courts are booked and you need to move your day around. There is just more time in the day here to get things done — you don’t find that 25-minute journeys end up taking 45. That’s why I like it."
