Andy Murray holds off Marin Cilic in straight sets on Thursday in Miami. Murray will go up against Richard Gasquet for a spot in the title match.
Andy Murray needed one hour and 42 minutes plus a total of seven match points to beat Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Sony Open on Thursday afternoon. Murray served at just 53 percent and he double-faulted three times, but six breaks of Cilic allowed the favorite to advance without too much trouble.
Although the world No. 3 donated his first two service games and trailed 3-1 in the opening set, the deficit was not a big one because Cilic showed absolutely no signs of being able to close things out. Murray earned three scalps of his opponent's serve and eventually finished off the proceedings with the set on his racket at 5-4.
Set two featured an even bigger discrepancy in the scoreline, but it was arguably more competitive. Murray survived a marathon game for a 3-1 advantage then failed to serve out the match at 5-2 despite having one match point. The second-seeded Scot squandered five more opportunities at 5-3 before finally converting when Cilic netted a backhand.
"I think today was probably the best match for me," Murray said of his fortnight in Miami. "It was a tough, tough match. The second set especially was a lot of long, long games and tough points. I just managed to come through that. Obviously, it took a while to get to the finish line, but I thought I played a solid match."
Murray will have to do so again on Friday against an in-form Richard Gasquet, who crushed Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-3 in the nightcap. Gasquet is 21-4 for the season, which already includes two titles.
