Marin Cilic sees off John Isner in straight sets on Monday in Miami. Cilic is through to a fourth-round showdown against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Just when it seemed like John Isner may be in line for some momentum, it came to a crashing halt.
Marin Cilic took care of Isner 6-3, 7-6(3) in the third round of the Sony Open on Monday night. Cilic withstood 20 Isner aces and held his last 10 service games to prevail in one hour and 17 minutes.
Isner, who had staged a significant comeback to beat Ivan Dodig in his Miami opener, came out and broke his opponent right away in the first game of the match. For the 6'9'' American, however, that was really his lone highlight of the proceedings. Isner gave back the back immediately for 1-1 and dropped serve again at 2-3 before Cilic closed it out.
Both players held throughout the second, with Cilic saving one break point and Isner facing none. The 11th-ranked Croat gave back an early mini-break in the ensuing tiebreaker with an errant forehand at 3-2, but he never lost control. Cilic won the last four points to clinch victory in style.
Next up for the No. 10 seed is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Jarkko Nieminen.
