  • Murray, Tsonga advance to Sony Open third round

    3/24/13 5:00 AM | Ricky Dimon
Murray, Tsonga advance to Sony Open third round Andy Murray eases past Bernard Tomic in straight sets on Saturday in Miami. Murray is joined in the third round by Jo-WIlfried Tsonga, a winner over Viktor Troicki.

    (2) Andy Murray d. Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-1

Murray made quick work of what had been a highly-anticipated showdown against Tomic as the world No. 3 rolled into the Sony Open third round in 56 minutes on Saturday afternoon. Tomic held his first two service games of the match and even saw multiple break points at 2-1, but it was downhill for him the rest of the way.

The 20-year-old Australian dropped five of the last six games in the opener, including at 3-5 on his own serve. Tomic, who explained afterward that he had been dealing with an illness, was more hopeless in the second. He won a mere two return points and saved none of the break points he faced. Next up for Murray is Grigor Dimitrov, who led Simone Bolelli by a set when the Italian retired.

    (6) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. Viktor Troicki 7-6(6), 6-3

Tsonga survived a tough first set but pulled away from Troicki to advance in one hour and 37 minutes on Saturday afternoon. Troicki twice led by a break in the first set and he even had a set point on his own serve at 5-4 and again at 6-5 in the ensuing tiebreaker. Tsonga, however, saved both of them and managed to steal an early advantage.

With momentum in hand, the eighth-ranked Frenchman made more routine work of the second. Still, he faced five breaks points--all five of which he fought off. Tsonga added two more scalps of the Troicki serve and his fourth break of the day came at 5-3 to clinch victory in style. Miami's No. 6 seed will battle an in-form Jarkko Nieminen for a place in round four.
