American wildcard James Blake shocked Julien Benneteau on Friday for a spot in the Sony Open third round. David Ferrer got a walkover due to Dmitry Tursunov's stomach illness.
James Blake (WC) def. Julien Benneteau (24) 6-2, 6-3
It was another upset win for veteran James Blake. This time, the American dispatched a seed in front of the home crowd. Blake, who is ranked 88 in the world, spent just one hour and one minute on court to earn a spot in the third round.
Julien Benneteau had a good start to the 2013 season. The Frenchman had a semifinal result in Sydney, but his finest tournament came in Rotterdam, where he not only made the final, but he got a second career win over Roger Federer.
The win is a solid one for Blake, who broke Benneteau's serve a whopping 6 times. The American had a few issues holding serve himself, but he was always on top in the match.
Blake will take on Albert Ramos in the third round, who upset Juan Monaco in the second round.
David Ferrer (3) def. Dmitry Tursunov W/O
Spaniard David Ferrer moved directly into the third round. Russia's Dmitry Tursunov was forced to pull out of the tournament with a stomach illness before their match on Friday afternoon. Prior to this setback, the Russian had been enjoying a rapid rise up the rankings, thanks in part to solid showings in Marseille and Dubai.
Ferrer will take on Fabio Fognini in the third round.
