Bernard Tomic holds off Marc Gicquel in straight sets on Thursday in Miami. Tomic is joined in the second round by Santiago Giraldo, a routine winner over Rhyne Williams.

Tomic fired 10 aces without double-faulting to defeat Gicquel in one hour and 23 minutes during first-round action at the Sony Open on Thursday afternoon. Gicquel, 35, did extremely well to qualify for the main draw and he carried his momentum into this one. He led by a break twice in the first set but could not seal the deal. Tomic broke at 4-5 to stay alive and he won another return game at 6-5 to steal the set.
Both players picked up their serves in the second and both saved a pair of break points en route to a tiebreaker. Gicquel again had his nose in front only to squander the lead, this time one of 2-0. Tomic recovered to win seven of the match's last eight points to take the 'breaker 7-3. Next up for the 20-year-old Aussie is Andy Murray.
Santiago Giraldo d. (WC) Rhyne williams 6-2, 6-4
Giraldo did not face a single break point while capitalizing on a dismal serving performance by williams to advance in one hour and 11 minutes on Thursday. With strong crowd support from the Colombian contingent, Giraldo took control right away with a break in the first game of the match. He closed out the opening frame of play with one more routine hold at 5-2.
williams fought hard in the second, but one donation of serve was one too many. The American wild card had a few slight openings against his opponent's serve after seeing absolutely none in the first set, but he could never take advantage. Giraldo had little trouble booking his spot alongside Marin Cilic in the next round. williams, meanwhile, served at 41 percent and double-faulted five times.
