  • Ferrer shares Miami section with Del Potro

    3/20/13 3:12 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer shares Miami section with Del Potro Spaniard David Ferrer drew Indian Wells finalist Juan Martin Del Potro in his quarter of the Sony Open.

After a spectacular start to the 2013 season, David Ferrer came up short at Indian Wells. The Spaniard suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Rafael Nadal in the finals of Acapulco and seemed to drag his disappointment with him to the California desert. There, the world No. 4 was dispatched in his first match by South African Kevin Anderson.

Ferrer shouldn't face anyone truly dangerous until the fourth round, where he faces a potential match against Kei Nishikori, the No. 13 seed. But the true danger of the section is certainly Juan Martin Del Potro, who had an incredible run to the finals of Indian Wells. The Argentine dispatched both Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic en route to a 3-set loss in the title match to Rafael Nadal.

The one bit of good news for Ferrer is that Del Potro expended a great deal of effort, with the No. 5 seed playing a trio of lengthy 3-set matches to close out the tournament. Del Potro is seeded to meet countryman Juan Monaco in the round of 16, but Monaco has been in poor form and isn't at his best on slick hard courts.

If Del Potro manages his fatigue, he should find his way out of this section.
