With the absence of World No. 2 Roger Federer and BNP Paribas Open champion Rafael Nadal, World No. 6 Tomas Berdych headlines a tricky quarterfinal at the Masters 1000 Miami. The Czech enters the tournament seeded fourth.
World No. 6 Tomas Berdych makes his return to hard court competition following a semifinal finish at the BNP Paribas Open. The 27-year-old Czech won four consecutive matches before falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Berdych will be contesting his 9th Masters 1000 Miami, where he reached the final in 2010 (lost to Roddick).
The fourth seed leads a tricky quarter of the draw that hosts: (8) Richard Gasquet, (10) Nicolas Almagro, (14) Milos Raonic, (17) Sam Querrey, (18) Philipp Kohlschreiber, (25) Fernando Verdasco and (28) Mikhail Youzhny.
Other entrants in the same section are Tatsuma Ito, Yen-Hsun Lu, David Goffin, Robin Haase, Carlos Berlocq, Lukasz Kubot, Alejandro Falla, Go Soeda and wildcard Guido Pella.
Should the seeds hold through the draw, Berdych is slated to take on (25) Verdasco in round three and either (14) Raonic or (17) Querrey in the round of 16. Further progress through the tournament may set a quarterfinal clash with (8) Gasquet or (10) Almagro.
After a first-round bye, Berdych will commence his bid against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin or Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
