Anderson beats Simon to reach Indian Wells quarterfinals Kevin Anderson is through to the last eight in Indian Wells after taking out Gilles Simon in three sets on Wednesday. Anderson will now go up against Tomas Berdych.

Kevin Anderson maintained his fine form with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Gilles Simon in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday afternoon. Anderson converted three of seven break points before advancing in one hour and 47 minutes.

Playing with far more confidence than his opponent of late, Anderson wasted no time taking control against Simon. The 6'8'' South African benefited from a slew of Simon errors to break for 2-1 and he never came close to giving it back, losing a mere three points in his first four service games. For good measure, Anderson broke again at 5-3 on his third set point when Simon netted an overhead.

Based on current form, it would be fair to say Simon's second-set comeback came out of nowhere. But he had staged borderline miracle comebacks against Paolo Lorenzi and Benoit Paire earlier in the tournament, so belief was there. The 13th-ranked Frenchman seized his first break at 1-1 with a winner off the net cord and with that he was off to the races. In fact, Simon won six consecutive games to force a deciding set with ease.

Anderson may have been mentally gearing up for the third after the initial break in the second, and it paid off. The world No. 37 regained control by earning what proved to be a difference-making scalp of the Simon serve for 1-0. Both players held the rest of the way and Anderson dropped only five points in his last five service games. Simon had a slight 15-30 opening at 5-4, but Anderson won the final three points to clinch victory.

Anderson improved to 13-3 for the season en route to a showdown against Tomas Berdych, who dismissed Richard Gasquet in straight sets.
