  • Janowicz, Simon earn three-set victories

    3/10/13 11:32 AM | Ricky Dimon
Janowicz, Simon earn three-set victories Jerzy Janowicz and Gilles Simon battled into the Indian Wells third round on Saturday. Janowicz gets past David Nalbandian while Simon makes a wild comeback against Paolo Lorenzi.

    (24) Jerzy Janowicz d. David Nalbandian 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3

Janowicz turned in an unusually poor serving performance but he played stellar baseline tennis to hold off Nalbandian in two hours and 30 minutes in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday. Both men struggled immensely with their serves, which resulted in 10 breaks--a shocking number in a match involving Janowicz. Both Janowicz and Nalbandian double-faulted 10 times, while the Pole fired 11 aces to the Argentine's two.

Nalbandian did well to recover from the loss of set one in a tiebreaker. He converted both of his break chances in the second and served it out at 5-4. Janowicz returned the favor with two breaks of his own in the decider and he maintained his lead with a clutch hold for victory at 5-3. Indian Wells' No. 24 seed converted match point by forcing Nalbandian into an error with a powerful forehand. Next up for Janowicz is Richard Gasquet, who dismissed Bernard Tomic in straight sets.

    (13) Gilles Simon d. Poalo Lorenzi 6-3, 3-6, 7-5

Simon stormed back from innumerable deficits to overcome Lorenzi in two hours and 25 minutes on Saturday. Sheer hopeless of serve was the story of this one, and it was Simon who got off to a fast start by breaking three times in the first set. Lorenzi recovered with two more breaks of Simon to turn the tied and force a decider.

That set the stage for a hard-to-believe third set. Lorenzi raced to a 5-1 advantage but somehow could not finish the job. The veteran Italian even had two match points on his own serve at 5-2 and one more with his opponent trying to stay alive at 5-3. Lorenzi saw a break point at 5-5 to halt his collapse, but he could not capitalize on the opportunity. Simon managed to hold then inevitably broke his stunned opponent to finish things off in appropriate fashion. Simon will face fellow Frenchman Benoit Paire for a place in the fourth round.
