Ernests Gulbis continued his impressive form in Indian Wells with another rout of a seeded player, the victim this time No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic. World No. 2 Roger Federer also breezed through his second round match.
Ernests Gulbis (Q) def. Janko Tipsarevic (9) 6-2, 6-0
It was another win over a seed for qualifier Ernests Gulbis. The Latvian demolished Janko Tipsarevic to move into the third round in Indian Wells. Though Gulbis played well enough, the lop-sided scoreline was more a testament to Tipsarevic's horrific play than anything Gulbis did with his racket. The Serb, who has struggled mightily with form over the past month, donated the match to Gulbis with 3 winners and a whopping 19 unforced errors in the brief match.
Gulbis, who already upset Feliciano Lopez in the first round, moves into the third round against Italian clay-courter Andreas Seppi.
Roger Federer (2) def. Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-3
It was a routine opening match for Switzerland's Roger Federer. The Swiss barely needed to get out of second gear for his straight sets victory over Uzbekistan's Istomin.
Federer didn't face a single break point in the 58-minute victory. The Swiss, appearing well at home on the hard courts of the first Masters of the season, executed his game without any hitches, while Istomin struggled with the Swiss man's depth of shot and pace off the ground.
Federer finished the match with 3 aces and 2 double faults. He will take on Ivan Dodig of Croatia in the third round.
