Tomas Berdych may end up being the beneficiary of avoiding Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal in the Indian Wells draw. Berdych is in a section that includes David Ferrer, Richard Gasquet, and Gilles Simon.
With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the same quarter of the BNP Paribas Open draw, one semifinal spot is up for grabs in the third section. The top two contenders, of course, are David Ferrer and Tomic Berdych.
Ferrer is in the midst of another stellar season but he is trying to bounce back from a surprising and concerning 6-0, 6-2 loss to Nadal in the Acapulco final. He has a decent draw in the desert as long as he can get past what could be a tough opener against Kevin Anderson. The 6'7'' South African, who dismissed Victor Hanescu on Thursday, likely would have been seeded if not for a post-Australian Open elbow injury. The rest of Ferrer's path en route to the quarters could feature Fernando Verdasco and Gilles Simon.
Berdych also lost a title match last month, but in much different fashion (to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Marseille, during which Berdych had a championship point). The sixth-ranked Czech is in fine form in 2013 and he has to like his chances in Indian Wells mainly because he is in Ferrer's part of the bracket. Berdych is 2-4 against the Spaniard after a pair of blowout losses last fall, but he still has a decent chance in any matchup with Ferrer.
Up first for Berdych this week is Mischa Zverev, who outlasted Jurgen Melzer in a third-set tiebreaker. The No. 6 seed could run into either Florian Mayer or David Goffin in round three before a possible encounter with either Richard Gasquet, Jerzy Janowicz, or David Nalbandian.
Second-round matches to watch in this quarter include Janowicz vs. Nalbandian, Gasquet vs. Bernard Tomic, and Philipp Kohlschreiber vs. Benoit Paire.
